Protecting Your Building from Too Much Moisture

Masonry excess moisture protect building

Excessive moisture can cause many problems in a home, from the appearance of mold, mildew and rot to rust, peeling paint, damaged wood components, health problems and lots of other issues. Fortunately, there are many great ways to prevent all these issues – here are some:

  • Ensure that your roof and your gutters are strong and healthy – two of the principle sources of excessive moisture in and around homes are roof leaks and inefficient gutters that cannot direct water away from the building and soak the walls and the basement. Check the two structures and perform any repairs deemed necessary or, even better, get a professional roofer to perform the checks and the repairs for you;
  • Check the water pipes and the other components of the plumbing system – burst water pipes can also cause the excessive accumulation of moisture, so checking and repairing any fault of the water supply system is also essential. Dripping faucets and leaky reservoirs can also lead to excessive humidity, so make sure to check and repair these fixtures, too.  Make sure to have a Connecticut masonry expert repair any damages to exterior walls and foundation;
  • Add insulation – wall and attic insulation play not only the role of preventing energy exchange – insulation of the right type and thickness also maintains the humidity inside the home at optimal levels.
